- The board showed a tie but the results broke it
Short answer. While a round is live, tied players share a position and the board prints T2. Once the round is completed, Ringer applies the tie-break method the Commissioner chose in Scorecard settings. The default, "Ties stand (split points and purse)", keeps the tie. The other two methods break it on the closing holes. Money splits a tie in every case.
Why it happens
Three methods are available under Round Hub → Manage → Scorecard settings → Tie-break:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| "Ties stand (split points and purse)" | Default. Tied players stay tied; points and purse are shared. |
| "USGA / WHS — last 9, 6, 3, 1 holes" | Compares the last 9 holes, then the last 6, last 3, then the final hole. For net scores, the playing handicap is scaled to the stretch (half for nine holes, a third for six, a sixth for three, one eighteenth for the last hole), rounded .5 up, and deducted. Stroke index is not used. |
| "Countback — last 9, 6, 3, 1 holes by stroke index" | Same stretches, but net on each hole uses the strokes as they fall by stroke index. |
Worked example under USGA / WHS: two players tie on net 72. Over the last nine, one shot 38 gross with a playing handicap of 9, the other 39 gross with a playing handicap of 5. Scaled handicaps are 9 × 9/18 = 4.5 → 5 and 5 × 9/18 = 2.5 → 3, so the stretch nets are 33 and 36. The first player takes the place, and the results note "last 9" as the deciding stretch.
Stableford compares points on the same stretches. A player missing a score on a stretch cannot win that stretch. A tie the stretches cannot break still shares the position. Players marked WD, DQ, NS or DNF rank below the active field.
What to do
- To keep T2 as the final answer, choose "Ties stand (split points and purse)" before the round is completed.
- To change the method after results are published, reopen the round with a reason and publish corrected results. See Reopen a round.
- Do not expect the money to follow the broken tie. Winner-take-all pots split evenly among everyone tied for the lead, and ranked payout plans pool the places a tie spans and split them equally. The tie-break changes the printed place, not the payout.
Live boards on the wall, on the kiosk and on shared links always show the retained tie, so a T2 during play is correct even when the final sheet reads 2 and 3.
