- The app froze or went black while I was scoring
Short answer. Every score that showed a saved check is on the server, and anything still queued on your phone is kept on the phone. Close Ringer fully and reopen it. If the scorecard still will not load, open your group's scorekeeper link in any browser and keep scoring from the same hole.
Why it happens
The scorecard queues every tap on your device and sends it as signal allows, so a dark or frozen screen is almost always the app reloading after a dropped connection or a new version, not lost data. The iOS app loads the live Ringer site, so a hiccup while the phone comes back to the foreground can leave a blank screen for a moment. When a new version of Ringer was published while you were on the course, Ringer reloads itself once, but never while you are on a live scoring page. Scores queued offline are restored the next time the card opens, with "Restoring scorecard…" and then "Offline scores restored".
What to do
- Wait a few seconds, then close the app completely and reopen it. If you see "Let's get you back in." with "Ringer hit a temporary loading problem. Your saved scores and round data are safe.", tap Try again. If you see "That screen didn't load.", tap Retry.
- Look at the scorecard footer. "Saving N…" means the queue is draining. "N not saved · Retry" means the phone is waiting for signal; tap Retry once you have bars. "N saved offline · More" means the scores are held safely on the device until the next connection.
- Do not delete the app or clear the browser while scores are unsaved. If you see "This device couldn't safely store the queued score. Keep Ringer open and tap Retry now before leaving the app.", do exactly that.
- If the card will not open at all, use the scorekeeper link. The Commissioner shares it from the Round Hub with Share scoring link, or from Manage → Groups & tee times → Edit › → Share scorekeeper link. It opens in any phone browser with no login, shows the same group card, and keeps the same offline queue. A banner reads "You're offline — don't close this tab" while you have no signal.
- If the scorekeeper card shows "Your scorecard couldn't load — Try again to reopen your group's saved scores. If this continues, ask your commissioner to check the round's course and handicap setup.", the round itself needs attention from the Commissioner, not your phone.
- If Ringer is installed on your home screen and keeps showing an old version, close it fully and open it again. See The app looks out of date.
When you are back in, check the last two holes you entered against what the group remembers. The scorecard writes one cell at a time, so a partial hole is the only thing that can be left behind, and the footer will say "Hole N incomplete" if so.
