Ringer updates itself on launch and when it returns to the foreground; if a screen still looks old, fully close and reopen it

Short answer. Fully close Ringer and open it again. Ringer checks for a new version every time it launches or comes back to the foreground, and reloads itself once when it finds one, but a screen that has been open for a while can lag behind. There is no App Store update to wait for; the iPhone app shows the live site.

Steps

  1. Fully close the app. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause to see your open apps, then swipe Ringer up and away. On Android, open recent apps and swipe Ringer away. If you are in a browser tab, close the tab.
  2. Open it again. Ringer checks for an update on launch and applies it.
  3. Pull to refresh on Today if a list looks stale rather than the whole app.
  4. Check your connection. Ringer needs a network to fetch the newest version. Offline you will see "You're offline — Ringer needs a connection to load. Check your signal and try again — your scores are safe." Tap Try again once you have signal.

How it works

  • Ringer looks for a new version when it starts and whenever it returns to the foreground. When one is found it reloads once, on its own.
  • It never reloads while you are on a live scoring page. If you are mid-round when a new version ships, the update waits until you leave scoring, so a hole is never interrupted.
  • Right after a new version ships, an old screen can briefly fail to load a piece of the page. Ringer reloads that tab once automatically. If the retry screen appears after that, tap Try again.
  • The iPhone app is a shell around the live site, so the site's updates are the app's updates. The one exception is a build-level message in Settings, "Update the Ringer app", which means the installed build cannot receive push notifications and you should install the newest build from TestFlight or the App Store.
  • When the iPhone app comes back to the foreground it refreshes the screen you are on. On league screens it may show "This league hasn't refreshed yet. Your current screen is still open. Try again when your connection is stable." with Retry; the screen is intact, so retry when you have signal.

Good to know

  • Your scores are safe through all of this. Reloads and retry screens never clear saved scores. See App froze while scoring if a scoring screen itself is stuck.
  • If a route fails to load you will see "That screen didn't load." with the option to retry or go back to Today.
  • Signing out and back in is not needed for an update.
