Short answer. From the scorecard options sheet, tap Upload card photo, pick a photo of the paper card, and Ringer reads the gross scores for your group. You review every row in "Check the scorecard" before anything is saved, so nothing lands on the card that you did not look at.
Steps
- Open the scorecard, open the options sheet, and tap Upload card photo ("Review the photo's scores before saving."). "Add a past round" from Create opens this step automatically.
- Choose a JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or HEIF photo. A straight, bright, tightly cropped shot reads best.
- Wait for the read. Ringer runs two independent reads of the image and keeps only the cells where both agree. Anything they disagree on is left blank for you to fill in.
- In "Check the scorecard", each player is matched to a row on the card by name. Reassign rows if it guessed wrong, edit any hole (1 to 20) and the written Out, In and Total boxes (1 to 400), and check the cropped source row against the paper.
- Clear every issue. Rows can show "N holes missing", "Out total does not add up", "In total does not add up" or "Card total does not add up"; the badge reads "Totals match", "Calculated: N" or "N to fix". The apply button stays disabled ("Fix N issues") until every row is complete and consistent.
- If the photo differs from scores already on the card, tick "Replace N existing scores that differ from this card".
- Apply. You will see "Scores saved · N scores applied".
How it works
Ringer adds up the holes itself and compares them to the totals written on the card. The reader knows your group's names, hole count and pars, and can read raw strokes or relative marks like +1, −1, E and a dash. The photo is kept as evidence alongside the round.
Who can do this
A group's scorekeeper link, the outing's Commissioner or co-organizers, and league members with scoring rights. Personal per-player league links cannot import; use the group scorecard.
If it doesn't work
- "That HEIC/HEIF photo is too large. Choose a screenshot or an image under 3.5 MB." / "That photo is still too large. Crop it to the scorecard and try again." / "That image could not be prepared on this device." Crop tighter or take a screenshot of the photo.
- "No player scores were legible — try a straighter, brighter photo." Retake with less glare and the card square to the camera.
- "The card took too long to read. Try a tighter, brighter image." / "Scorecard reading took too long. Try once more or use a tighter crop." The read timed out (45 seconds). Try again with a tighter crop.
- "The scorecard reader is temporarily unavailable (NNN). Your photo was not the problem — try again shortly." Wait a minute, then retry.
- "Photo import isn't set up yet — add ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in the environment." Import is not enabled on your deployment. Enter scores by hand.
- "You can't import for this group." / "Use the group scorecard to enter scores from this participant link." You need the group link or manager rights.
- "Reload the scorecard before applying it." The card changed while you were reviewing. Reload and import again.
- "This round is closed. The commissioner can reopen it from the round hub to make changes." Scoring is locked. Reopen first.
