- A player I added mid-round has no handicap
Short answer. Handicaps freeze when a round goes live, and a player added afterwards is frozen at the moment they are added, using whatever index they had then. If that was nothing, they are unhandicapped for the round and the card shows "No PH". Typing an index on the roster afterwards does not change the frozen card. To fix it, add the index and then apply a tee correction for that player, which recalculates the round's frozen handicaps with the scores intact.
Why it happens
Ringer treats the start of play as a boundary. Every player's index, tee, course handicap and strokes by hole are copied into the round at go-live so the board and the money cannot drift while people play. After that, a freeze only fills gaps: a newcomer gets a row, existing rows are never rewritten, and a later index edit is deliberately ignored. The one sanctioned way to recompute is an explicit correction: a tee change for a player or group, which replaces the frozen handicaps in a single step, or a change to the hole count.
The Handicap analysis for the round labels each player "Frozen at round start"; a late player with no index reads "No handicap resolved — no Handicap Index on file".
What to do
Next time, add the index with the player
Round Hub → Manage → Players → add the player and fill in Handicap index ("12.4 or +2.1") before saving. Players the Commissioner adds land as in and are placed in the first group, and their handicap freezes correctly on the spot.
If they are already on the card
- Add the index: tap the "+ HCP" chip on their roster row and type it, or use "+ Add index" in Manage → Players.
- Re-set their tee: Round Hub → Manage → Groups & tee times → Edit › on their group → choose the tee for that player (or for the group). Confirm "Correct the played tee for this live round? Ringer will recalculate and replace the frozen stroke map in the same transaction. Scores stay intact."
- Check the scorecard: the "No PH" chip becomes "PH n" and the gold stroke dots appear on the holes they receive.
- If you see "Pairings changed while Ringer was recalculating handicaps. Reload and apply the tee correction again.", someone edited groups at the same time. Reload and repeat step 2.
Good to know
- The correction recalculates from the indexes and tees on file now, for the players it covers. Scores are never touched.
- A net money game will not settle with an unhandicapped player: "N players have no handicap index — a net game can't settle without it." Fix it before publishing, or switch that game to gross.
- On a completed round the correction is refused: "This round is finalized. Reopen it before correcting a tee."
