Enter or change your Handicap Index

Type your index on your Profile settings, tap + for a plus handicap, and save; it applies to every future outing

  1. Help
  2. Handicaps
  3. Enter or change your Handicap Index

Short answer. Go to Profile → Settings, type your Handicap Index in the Handicap field (tap + for a plus handicap), then tap "Save player details". The number is yours across Ringer and every new outing uses it unless a Commissioner sets a different number for that outing.

Steps

  1. Open Profile → Settings.
  2. In the Handicap field, type your index with one decimal, such as 12.4. The field only accepts digits, a point and a sign.
  3. For a plus handicap, tap the + button beside the field. The helper text reads "Tap + for a plus handicap. Used for course and playing handicaps."
  4. Tap "Save player details".

To remove your index, clear the field and save. Ringer then treats you as unhandicapped, which is not the same as scratch.

How it works

  • Ringer accepts any index from +10 to 54. The value is stored to one decimal.
  • Your Profile shows the number under Official Handicap with one of three statuses: "Not connected" (no index), "Verified ✓" (imported from a GHIN card, or entered by a Commissioner) or "Player supplied" (you typed it).
  • A number you type yourself is always marked self-reported. If you had a verified index from a GHIN import and you type over it by hand, the verified badge comes off, because the imported number is no longer the one on file. Import again from your GHIN card if you want the verified badge back.
  • Depending on your invite, you may also be asked for your index during onboarding, with the choices "Import GHIN screenshot", "Enter an index number" or "I don't have a handicap". Skipping is fine; you can add it later from your Profile.
  • On an outing roster, a self-reported index shows as HCP 12 · est. until a Commissioner confirms it or sets a number for that outing.

Good to know

  • Ringer handicaps are not official. They are the numbers your crew agrees to play off.
  • Changing your index does not change any round that has already started. Those rounds keep the number they froze at the start. See Handicaps are frozen when the round starts.

If it doesn't work

  • "Enter a valid handicap index from +10 to 54 (or leave blank)." The value could not be read, or it is outside the accepted range. Use the form 12.4 or +2.1, or clear the field.
  • "Enter a Handicap Index such as 7.5 or +1.2." Shown during onboarding when the shape is wrong: at most two digits before the point, one after, optional leading +.
  • "Enter a valid Handicap Index (or leave it blank)." Shown during onboarding when the number is outside +10 to 54.
